Cool people go bowling.  It's a fact. George Clooney is cool and he used to wear bowling shirts all the time. Charlie Sheen wore a bowling shirt in almost every episode of Two And A Half Men. 

The gritty guys and girls from Breaking Bad have a tournament every season with their own bowling league. The cast of Mad Men go bowling and John Hamm is pretty good! Bill Murray pretty much invented cool and funny, from Ghostbusters to Lost In Translation, and so if Bill wears a bowling shirt, you know it has to be cool.  

But none of them are as cool as the King himself, Elvis Presley. Elvis was so cool that even today more than 35 years after he went to the great bowling alley in the sky, people flock to his house in Memphis, Tennessee in America and they still buy and play his music. He sold more records than anyone else ever - 2.5 Billion! That's 2,500,000,000! 

So What Made Elvis Cool?

It wasn't just his singing or his dancing, even though they were both revolutionary - when he burst onto the scene, he was as out there as Pink or Lady Gaga! Elvis was the whole package, from his slicked back hair and crazy sideburns to the blue suede shoes he sang about. Later in his life, he took to wearing capes covered in sequins, like a singing superhero, spreading that cool wherever he went. But early on, he wore shirts like the one in this picture

that set off a fashion trend which started in the USA but soon swept around the world. Everyone had to have their name or their initials on their shirt, just like Elvis - especially when they went bowling. 

Retro Is Cool

Like Elvis, retro is cool and bowling shirts keep coming back into fashion - just like the game itself which people have loved to play for generations.
