A recent study from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom has found that happy employees may be up to 12 per cent more productive than their unhappy counterparts.

The findings were uncovered by researchers Andrew J. Oswald, Eugenio Proto and Daniel Sgroi, in a series of experiments with over 700 individuals that aimed to discover the relationship between productivity and happiness.

To measure the relationship, individuals were offered 'happiness' in the form of rewards such as chocolate or watching a funny comedy show. The individuals who were offered the treats displayed an average 12 per cent greater productivity, whilst unhappiness was associated with lower productivity.

It makes sense that happy individuals will be more likely to respond with higher levels of motivation and productivity at work, which could mean businesses who go out of their way to ensure their employees are happy reap the benefits in a corporate environment.
